Taking vital signs is crucial, but empathy is essential! 🩺✨

Our Nursing Fundamentals students have been learning about taking vital signs and took their learning to the next level by trying out the Geriatric Simulator. Stepping into a patient’s shoes builds the compassion and understanding needed for real-world healthcare. We are so proud of their dedication to patient care! 💙

They even got to share what they’re interested in studying—and a few walked away with some UNCP gear!

On Friday, students from Mr. Strickland’s English III classes were visited by Mr. Mark Deese, a member of the Tuscarora Tribe of NC and Youth Development Specialist with the Public Schools of Robeson County's Indian Education Resource Center. A 30-year veteran in Indian Education, Deese masterfully shared his people’s culture, music, history, regalia, and Creation story with students. Rather than encountering the Iroquois Creation Myth only as a written text in a textbook, students heard the story through the oral storytelling tradition in which it has been passed down for generations. Using evidence from the written text, students then compared and discussed the two versions, analyzed differences in presentation and meaning, and the inferences those differences allowed them to make. The presentation also opened broader conversations about culture, identity, and historical perspective, reminding students that the peoples they study in literature are not relics of the past, but living communities whose traditions continue today. This collaborative effort created a deeply enriching learning experience that brought the text—and the living tradition behind it—to life for our students while directly reinforcing multiple Grade 11 ELA standards. Thank you, Mr. Deese!
